Responsibilities: Come join JPL's Occupational Safety Program Office as a Health Physicist V. We are looking for a Senior Lead Health Physicist who will work under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer and the Lead Industrial Hygienist. You will provide protection from ionizing and non-ionizing sources of radiation, along with other hazardous agents, for staff of JPL, members of the public, contractors and NASA personnel, and the environment. Radiation sources are utilized in research, development and deployment in a variety of Earth-based and space-based missions. In this position, you will have the following responsibilities: Performs highly complex, and unique job functions and activities. Identifies, evaluates, and establishes safety and health control measures for a wide range of potential health and safety hazards, including the development and application of new and existing health and safety standards, procedures, consistent with established JPL Rules, and local, State and Federal regulations. Performs highly complex and unique analyses. Investigates and presents findings on highly complex and unique occurrences; advices senior management Identifies, evaluates, and assesses highly complex and unique potential safety and health hazards by examining the work environment, operations, and processes; uses significant expertise to analyze full details of the nature of the work, materials, and equipment used, and employee work practices (behavior). Oversees and interprets results of others' work place sampling for potential safety and health hazards of the workplace. Oversees implementation of workable solutions in compliance with applicable standards and regulations in regard to impairment of employee health and safety. Presents conclusions and imparts lessons learned to JPL and NASA senior management. Oversees all processes and methods of sample collection and analysis and ensures that appropriate action is taken. Partner with regulatory agencies regarding the regulations, standards, and procedures for the safe and healthful conduct of work; advices senior management on issues. Leads and directs the design of safety training programs for employees. Serves as internal expert to advise senior management on safety and health issues; serves on reviews boards. Provides expert knowledge of diverse safety and health topics. Researches existing health and safety regulations and proposed changes; leads the implementation of changes at the laboratory. Authors written programs, white papers and requirement documents related to Health and Safety issues that lead to extending the boundary of the field of knowledge. Serves as Laboratory expert to regulatory agencies and / or NASA in their area of responsibility. Multidisciplinary and in-depth expertise regularly used in the application and development of advanced principles, theories and concepts. Has significant expertise in one or more related fields of knowledge. Has expert knowledge of industry and/or academic practices and standards across a range of applications. Has expert knowledge of Laboratory policies and procedures, NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations across a range of applications. Recognized Laboratory expert in field of knowledge. Works on critical, often self initiated, assignments and projects under only consultative direction. Approves high-risk deviations from established policies and procedures. Completed work is assessed, through consultation and agreement with others, for desired results and long term contributions to institution. As a team leader, Is accountable for team results on all components of critical projects and assignments, including performance standards, budget and schedule. Actions and decisions have a significant positive impact on the success of the Laboratory, due to creation of significant new business opportunities, critical mission successes, emerging technology breakthroughs, and state-of-the-art improvements in processes or methods. Erroneous decisions or recommendations will result in failure to achieve the organization's critical objectives and affect its reputation and credibility. Leads projects, activities or functions that may have distinct subordinate components. Directs work, inspires, mentors and coaches others internal and external to institution and scope of responsibility. Advises leadership personnel throughout the institution. Applies significant expertise in one or more related fields of knowledge to provide leadership, oversight, and monitoring to an organization's technical products, services, and/or capabilities; provides assessment of technical deliverables; resolves technical and resource issues. Frequent use of creativity and innovation to extend the boundaries of achievement in a given field of knowledge or practice. Analysis of situations or data requires recognition and evaluation of, as well as crucial decisions as to, intangibles. Interactions normally involve advising senior management on advanced and unique issues. Advises and consults with senior management or equivalent within and outside own organization. Represents JPL through frequent interface with representatives of organizations outside JPL. Makes frequent contributions to industry partners and other NASA centers. Forms and leads multidisciplinary, cross-organizational teams inside and outside JPL. Teams typically address crucial, complex issues. Qualifications: Bachelors with 12 years of related experience Masters with 10 years of related experience PhD with 8 years of related experience Desired Qualifications: Experience with a Type A Broadscope radioactive materials license (Nuclear Regulatory Commission or Agreement State). Eligible for certification by the Board of Laser Safety; one year experience as a facility Laser Safety Officer. ******IMPORTANT****** This position, because of its associated job duties, has been determined by JPL to be safety-sensitive as defined in JPL's Drug-Free Workplace Requirement. An employee holding this position will be subject to periodic, unannounced, random drug testing. Please refer to JPL's Drug-Free Workplace Requirement for more information. Candidates who are hired into designated safety-sensitive positions will be included in a pool from which individuals are randomly selected to participate in the unannounced drug testing.
